But boys and girls, there is no need for dogma, or tell me, would you be among those that booed Bob Dylan for going electric? Would you be there among those who threw tomatoes (even if only verbally)? Its only new equipment, and new equipment will bring new sounds, I mean, it has been over ten years that Radiohead gave in and said "Ok, mr. computer, ok". Sticking to the roots, they say. The roots of what? All I can see is the branches, and they look so exciting. They move in all possible directions, while the roots are stuck there in the ground, immovable. I dig it, I dig it, I do swear by all chuckberriness, but I do prefer the surprises of where the wind and the growth will take these new branches of pop pop pop music. - Ricardo Domeneck

turner prize judge: the year of bad art
A Turner Prize judge this year, Lynn Barber, is scathing about the quality of work submitted. "There is so much bad work around, so much that is derivative, half-baked or banal, you can't believe that galleries would show it. I think what happened is that the huge success of the YBAs in the Nineties has created a peculiar post-boom glut whereby there are now more galleries looking for young artists than worthwhile artists to fill them." Her thoughts are in The Observer .

On October 5th, the 27th Bienal de São Paulo opens on Ibirapuera Park, where it is hosted in the Oscar Niemeyer building for the Biennial Foundation. Curated by Lisette Lagnado, it is surrounded by high expectations, since whispers everywhere hope Lagnado will be able to bring the São Paulo Biennial back to its cutting edge role after the stagnation of recent years. This year, the title chosen by Lisette Lagnado and the co-curators was Roland Barthes's book title "How to live together" and the list of artists invited amounts to 119, including the Atelier Bow-Wow / Tokyo, Dan Graham / New York, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster / Paris, Júlio Bressane / Rio de Janeiro, Sanghee Song / Seoul and Meschac Gaba / Roterdam, for example. celebrations of shostakovich centenary
Dmitry Shostakovich would have been one hundred years ago this year, and classical music is celebrating the famed composer. Speaking about technological innovation, Shostakovich once said, "As for the strictly technical devices from such musical 'systems' as, say, the twelve-tone or the aleatory ... everything is good in moderation ... The use of elements from these complex systems is entirely justified if it is dictated by the idea of the composition." More information from the BBC.

counterculture and cyberculture: co-dependent
'Fred Turner points out in his revealing new book, “From Counterculture to Cyberculture: Stewart Brand, the Whole Earth Network, and the Rise of Digital Utopianism” (University of Chicago Press), there is no way to separate cyberculture from counterculture; indeed, cyberculture grew from its predecessor’s compost. Mr. Turner suggests that Stewart Brand, who created the “Whole Earth Catalog,” was the major node in a network of countercultural speculators, promoters, inventors and entrepreneurs who helped change the world in ways quite different from those they originally envisioned.' Here's the full review from the New York Times.

steve reich more in demand than ever
Composer Steve Reich turns 70 next month, and he has never been more in demand as a musical figurehead. "Reich may be an acclaimed cultural figure now, but at the beginning he was a revolutionary... He happily reclaimed the harmonies that the Western world had found sufficient for centuries; indeed, he looked back further to medieval music, as well as to Hebrew chant, and Balinese and African percussion traditions... And this was so controversial that, during the first 10 years of his ensemble, most of the performances of Reich's music were in art galleries and museums, not concert halls," The Independent reports.

In accepting the task of programming a nine-production playbill in a city with small and conservative theatre audiences, [Wajdi] Mouawad boldly announced that art is born from artists' hallucinatory perspectives that change the way we see the world, and that his job was to promote this kind of madness," according to the Globe and Mail of Toronto.

They discovered that fans of every style of music had taken drugs, with those who preferred DJ-based club music topping the list." Other findings include that more than 25% of classical buffs smoke pot, that blues fans are the most likely to have a driving violation, and that fans of Broadway musicals are the least likely to have tried drugs.

the cinematographical and art
During the past twenty years the use of projected image in art has rapidly expanded, producing equally rapid alterations in the definitions and parameters of its employment. A symposium at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin focuses on new writings that take into consideration both the current status, forms and uses of the projected image and its complicated and multiple histories. Ten international scholars will present new research on a variety of key topics involving artists' uses of the cinematographic in the twentieth and twenty-first century. Relating current screen practice to moments in the history of the medium, these papers investigate topics ranging from the film cooperatives of the 1960s, the endurance and representation of time in recent projected-image work, multiple screens and montage in contemporary art, to the idea of converging media through digitalization in the late 1990s and 2000s. Speakers include Beatriz Colomina, Mary Anne Doane, Chrissie Iles, David Joselit, Sven Luttiken, Gregor Stemmrich among others.Lectures by Beatriz Colomina, Chrissie Iles, David Joselit, Mark Nash, Gregor Stemmrich et al. 27 October: Hamburger Bahnhof and 28 / 29 October: Kino Arsenal.

mozart in the clubs
Classical musicians are heading into clubs. "Purists may shudder at the thought of string quartets spliced with breakbeats and dance grooves, but none of these young musicians, composers and producers sees classical clubbing as a threat to traditional classical music. If anything, they hope that, by introducing classical sounds to a club-going audience who would never usually set foot inside a concert hall, they may breathe new life into the genre." More in The Telegraph.
